FLOOD & DISASTER PREVENTION INFRASTRUCTURE

Houston’s vulnerability to flooding and extreme weather has only grown with each passing year, yet Whitmire refuses to take this issue seriously.

Whitmire's lack of concern went as far as to antagonize the experts on the matter, flat out ignoring them, and even attacking their spouses as “nerds” on Facebook. Check it out for yourself.

On the other hand, the flooding issue is personal to Neeloy (see image). Neeloy will take a proactive, science-based approach to protect communities before disaster strikes. His primary directive will consist of reworking the framework of Houston’s existing Capital Improvement Plan to be insulated from political/business influences and to target improvement of disaster infrastructure based solely on metrics of minimizing fatalities and major financial loss.

His administration will invest in modernizing stormwater infrastructure, including expanded detention basins, updated drainage systems, and green infrastructure such as permeable pavement. And he won’t leave those who know best on read :) Working alongside regional and federal partners, he’ll push for transparent, long-term planning that builds a more resilient Houston for the decades to come.

Aftermath of Neeloy's sister being trapped in a flooded car for hours. An unhoused man in the area (Stanley) swam her to safety, providing a quicker response than Whitmire's city services.
